Ringneck Decoys

This cocky diver with the rear-facing head crest is the mainstay of our Mississippi Flyway diver shooting, especially these days with the declining population and lower bag limits for bluebills.

They nest locally in the forested lake region of Minnesota and north into Canada providing us shooting from opening day until ice-up and then on down the flyway to wintering grounds in the deep south.

Therefore, ringneck duck decoys were a priority for us (mallards next). My hunting buddies and myself felt intuitively that good ringneck duck decoys would be more effective than the bluebills we had been using and we were right! While any diver duck decoy will work fairly well (and sometimes even mallards) we found we could get more ringnecks in closer by using species specific duck decoys. Getting birds in close for sure recognition and clean kills is a must for today’s sportsman. We like our diver duck decoys to be oversize since we hunt a variety of water from large, open expanses to heavily vegetated wild rice bays and cattail sloughs. We want our duck decoys to be noticed (recognized) and the 12" x 7" two times oversize dimensions of our ringneck assures that will happen. In fact, they work so well you can get by with fewer Autumn Wings duck decoys in your set. This saves you time when you are cold and hungry at the end of a days hunting. If you normally rig 3 dozen standard size, 1 1/2 dz will do just fine where our ringneck is concerned (cut your normal rig by half). Or if you are like me and want more impact from your duck decoys, increase the size of your existing spread. Setting and picking up duck decoys is part of our duck hunting tradition! Autumn Wings hand carved basswood ringneck decoys weigh about 1.5 lbs each. Based on our proven concave bottom design these decoys ride more realistically than most flat bottom styles. The pine keels are notched to accept a 6" lead strap as a counterbalance for self-righting applications. You will be impressed with our three hand carved poses standard, resting, and sleeper. Oil paints are hand brushed, including feather details, resulting in a realistic "feather sheen". Our use of linseed oil as a preservative and paint binder will ensure you many years of faithful service. Of course we use glass eyes to give our decoys that finishing touch of realism and quality.
