Cherokee Floating Decoys

Cherokee Inflatable Duck & Goose Decoys
When I was first introduced to the Cherokee Sports inflatable duck and goose decoys my first thought was these will be great for walk-in hunters and guys who never have enough space in the duck boat. This proved to be true yet I was surprised by how realistic these inflatables look on the water and the LIFELIKE MOVEMENT they add to my decoy rig. Both the duck and the goose decoys combine a flat bottom design with lightweight allowing the wind to move them about. This is much different then the previous decoys (field mallards) we had from Cherokee that were shaped more like footballs.

The designer at Cherokee added internal ballast so they self-right and stay put even in high winds. I have personally hunted with them in winds up to 40 mph without problems. The photo-image is very realistic and the special dull coat finish results in a very natural impression on the water. Of course they never require painting! Both the ducks and geese ship as 6-packs and if they do pick-up a stray BB while hunting (it happens) patch kits are included. I have two seasons under my belt with my rig of Cherokee inflatables and they look as good as new (Dan Brutlag - Smiling Duck Outfitters).

Inflatable Decoy Applications (from personal experience)

  • Mix them with your conventional decoys, the added motion is a magnet, don’t be surprised if birds land on top of them.
  • Grab a handful of the mallards & woodducks for that isolated hunting spot that’s hard to reach. I took my 8-year-old son to a woodland pond accessible only by walking for opening day mallard and woodie action. Conventional decoys are a load when you are also carrying a youth 20-gauge shotgun, BB gun, binocs, and lots of snacks!
  • Hunt from a small duck boat, pirogue, or canoe? You will really appreciate the lightweight of these decoys when you paddle or push poll.
  • Pack-in 4-5 dozen duck & goose decoys yourself to that hot prairie pothole that never fails to be in the middle of the section.
  • Rig them as you would conventional decoys although we can’t recommend wrapping the lead strap anchor around the neck, even though I have done it that way. The best idea I have seen is to use the plastic “Tangle-Free” line with a “tear-drop” shaped anchor. Place a sliding pinch clamp on the opposite side of the tie-off from the anchor and you may adjust the anchor line to suit your water depth. When finished pull the anchor up to the tie-off and slide the pinch clamp in place to hold it.
