Since black ducks are rare visitors to our Mississippi flyway we always consider harvesting one to be a memorable occasion. While our brothers in the Eastern flyway have a huntable population the trophy status is still in order due to the wariness and caution these ducks exhibit when working your duck decoys. If blacks do frequent your hunting area, even occasionally, adding some of our black duck decoys to your mallard rig will not only help improve your odds with the blacks but other species as well. Blacks make an effective confidence decoy, as it seems other species of ducks appreciate their wariness as much as hunters do.
Seeing as how blacks are "cousins" to mallards we based our basswood shapes on our 4 mallard poses (standard, resting, sleeper, dabbler). The dimensions we use are a magnum sized 16" X 7" with weights of approximately 1.75 lbs each. We compromised with an olive colored bill and do not distinguish our black decoys as drake or hen. Our signature hand applied oils over a linseed oil base coat result in a realistic feather finish that even wary Mr. Black will find hard to resist. The concave decoy bottom shape spanned by our pine keel offers a realistic ride. The 6" notch at the bottom rear of the keel accomodates a lead strap for self-righting ballast. The composition of the 6-pack is 2 dabblers, 2 resting, 1 standard, and 1 sleeper along with our complimentary 6-compartment decoy bag.
